Bleeding disorders are medical conditions leading to poor blood clotting and prolonged bleeding. Some of these disorders such as Hemophilia A, Hemophilia B and von Willebrand's Disease are lifelong, inherited conditions. Typically, the genes that regulate the manufacture of proteins necessary for blood clotting are defective or deficient in a person with a bleeding disorder. These diseases can range from mild to severe.

Diagnosis

If there is a family history of bleeding or if an accident with abnormal bleeding occurs, Individuals should be tested at a Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) to determine whether
they have a bleeding disorder.

Treatment

The proteins necessary for blood clotting, called clotting factors, can be extracted from blood or created in laboratories. These products, called factor concentrates, can be administered regularly to help prevent bleeding or to control a bleeding episode. Advances in medicine together with comprehensive care programs ensure that factor replacement therapies are safer than ever.

Other treatments for bleeding disorders include DDAVP intra-nasal preparations, (Stimate®), and anti-fibrinolytic agents (Amicar®).

Treatment depends upon the specific disorders, its severity, and the type of bleeding episode. Superficial bruising and minor cuts generally do not require factor replacement therapy. And, while serious bleeding episodes occur in people of all ages, they are generally rare in infancy.

Women who experience excessive bleeding during their menstrual cycles may benefit from prophylactic therapy (preventative treatment).

Many over the counter medications, including aspirin, aggravate bleeding. No medication should be taken without first consulting your HTC.

Education & Training

Crescent Healthcare serves as a professional resource for physicians, dentists, nurses and other health professionals, community agencies, schools and the general public.

For example, in the school setting Crescent’s Patient Advocate and Clinical Director can train the nursing and teaching staff on how to recognize and best manage a bleeding episode. Then working with the school’s personnel, develop an action plan for first aid treatment and communication.
